Suffolk firm Denny Bros backs bike to work day

Staff at family firm Denny Bros in Kempson Way, Bury St Edmunds, recently showed their support for National Cycle to Work Day today.

“We encourage cycling as a company because it is green and it is healthy,” said managing director Barry Denny, who is himself a member of the West Suffolk Wheelers.

“We are very active with the cycle to work scheme whereby people can buy a bicycle and pay it back over six months out of their pre-tax income. We’ve had about 30 staff take that up. We also have showers and a really good bike storage facility so we are a cycle friendly firm.”

With strong demand for local conference facilities, it was of no surprise that businesses and organisations were soon enquiring about how they could use the venue for their own purposes. Over a decade later and the facilities have been expanded to cater for meetings of all sizes from two to one hundred.

Fix-a-Form International's managing director Andrew Denny recently accompanied a team of students from King Edward VI School on a trek across Madagascar. The four week event took place over the summer holidays and the students were required to make their own travel, food & accommodation arrangements once in the country.

Whilst trekking through the rainforest, they had the pleasure of seeing an array of unique wildlife including rare birds and lemur. The group stopped at a village along the way to help out on a building project to renovation ground for a new school.

Tributes have been paid to the 'hard working and caring' co-founder of leading independent print specialists Denny Bros who has died aged 85. Russell Denny launched the business with his brother Douglas in the garage of their Bury St Edmunds home in 1945. The enterprise went from strength to strength gradually expanding to larger sites and established the award winning Fix-a-Form process.

Mr Knight takes over the role from Andrew Denny, who becomes the chamber's honorary president, with Matthew Moss of chartered accountants Ensors being elected vice-chairman.

"I am delighted and proud to take on the role of chairman of the Bury St Edmunds Chamber of Commerce and I am looking forward to the challenges that may arise over the next couple of years," said Mr Knight. And he thanked Mr Denny for his work in leading the Chamber over the last two years, saying he was "a hard act to follow".

Denny Bros won both the Environment and Family Business of the Year categories, and then beat off competition from eight other category winners to claim the night's top honour: the Business of the year award.
